House of Lords: Property Guardianship Debate
Yesterday the House of Lords held a short debate on property guardianship, led by Baroness Jones who asked the Government to;
- Ensure people living in vulnerable property are protected.
- Place property guardianship on the Government’s radar.
- Recognise the massive opportunity to put empty buildings to use in housing more of the population.
The Baroness and others sought to encourage the Government to provide guardians with more residency protections.
You can find the debate here.
In reply, Lord Bourne, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and Welsh Office) confirmed that the Government would look at improving enforcement guidance; disseminating best practice and meeting with the chairman of the new property guardian companies’ association. He welcomed the work done by the London Assembly and the University of York which he is reviewing closely. He intends to report back to the Baroness and the Peers after discussing this issue within the Ministry.
We shall keep you informed of any developments as they happen.
